Abstract
Prenatal cytogenetic analysis of cultured amniocytes was performed after amniocentesis due to advanced maternal age in 17 weeks of gestation. Analysis of GTG-banded chromosomes showed small marker chromosomes in 29 of the 40 colonies analysed. The parents¡¯ karyotypes were normal. We found the marker appeared to be derived from chromosome D group p arm region. Depending on the origin and genetic material of the sSMCs, either can cause severe congenital malformation and mental retardation or does not cause any phenotypic abnormality. So, accurate identification of the marker chromosome was important for prenatal counselling.
We experienced a case of sSMCs by amniocentesis and report with a brief review of literatures.
